OUR STORY
It all started with a shoe box...
Late in 2017, while living in Syracuse, NY (a.k.a. "The Salt City" for its salt springs dating back throughout history) owner Kyle Halm was looking for a place to purchase a custom leather helmet shield when the idea of making his own came to fruition. Kyle then received a basic leatherworking kit as a gift which he carried in a shoebox and often brought to the firehouse to tinker with late in the evening between runs. One day while practicing different hand carved and tooled designs on scrap leather, the chief of the department walked in and inquired about Kyle's hobby and requested to have a helmet shield made. This was the first of many requests and ironically Kyle never got around to making his own helmet shield. This was the beginning of what is now Salt City Leatherworks.
In late 2018 Kyle was hired as a career firefighter in Northern Virginia and moved south. Since then, the once hobby has grown into a small business now operating out of a workshop in Shepherdstown, West Virginia. Our small business is now made up of several team members with various backgrounds in the fire, rescue, and emergency services. Our company takes pride in making extremely customizable and quality leather gear that's made to last. We do our best to ensure every customer has a great experience with us because if we don't take care of them, someone else will.
